How to ruin your Web site in 9 steps

If you have a Web site and you think that it needs a redesign to improve the CATHEDRAL and the usabilidad is easy to find advice to improve those aspects but very little is said about which is not due to do, for that reason Dustin Brewer has created post very interesting How call to ruin your website in 10 easy steps (what in fact they are 9), that I am going next them to mention:

  1. Sound, is not bad to have sound in a Web site but the bad thing is that it reproduces automatically and that does not include an option to stop the sound.
  2. Animation, is not the animations flash rather of the GIF's animated, those of gaudy colors of the 1996 Web, already we are in the 2008.
  3. Intrusive publicity, annoying and famous popups, if you think to include publicity avoids popups and banners that they change of many colors.
  4. Bad typography, a bad election of the font for example the Comic Sans and some other engendros can ruin your Web site, in addition you must consider that all the fonts are not present in all the computers.
  5. Resolution of screen, if you have a screen with a resolution of 1920×1280 does not mean that you are going to have to design a Web site for that resolution, still the majority of the screens have resolutions of 1024×768 and 800×600.
  6. Bad navigation, this aspect is one of most important, the user not always is going to be guessing where is the information of the Web site, to improve the usabilidad you must increase the number of links in navigation therefore the user will have more opportunities to find what looks for.
  7. Time of load, can be that you have the best connection of 100 Mbps and an impeccable design but your site correctly is not optimized for a fast load the other users with connections are going slow it to stop visiting.
  8. Accessibility of the Web site, although the percentage of disabled people who sail by Internet is little you must take, them into account, for them is important to understand how the readers of screens work.
  9. Information of contact, all Web site needs to have contact information, this so that the users can be put in contact with you, at least includes 2 forms to do it, by email (contact form), by telephone, postal mail or instantaneous mail.

With the exception of point 3, the article describes one of the sites with greater success of the moment: MySpace.
